Motel Room: #5

We broke camp at Wasa because of rain. All day long, it was either raining, or threatening rain, and after dealing with unsettled weather for the previous two days, we just got tired of it. So, we decided to head southwest, to Yahk, where we'd booked five days in the campground.
Our booking was from Aug 1-4, but when we arrived, we saw the campground was deserted, and only a couple of people were staying in the motel. Yahk Provincial Park, just near the entrance to the hamlet, was almost deserted, as well.
The hamlet of Yahk is, quite literally, a one-gas-station place. There's the old hotel across the highway from the campground and motel, a general store which is part of the gas station, and a small eatery where you can get trendy coffee and a small selection of pastries, and that's it. Still, in spite of its near-invisibility, Yahk is still a neat place to explore, with the old Hotel and its treasures on display, Canuck Creek, and the back-woods areas.
Since it was pouring hard when we arrived, we decided to spend the first night in the motel, ust so we could dry out. In the first room we got, the main light bulb was burnt out. The gal minding the desk said, "Oh, I can't change that," and gave us a room just a couple of doors down. In the second room we were taken to, there was coffee sitting in the small coffee pot on the cart under the window; a quick look at the coffee grounds in the basket told me it had been sitting like that for at least two days. The smoke detector didn't work. There was garbage in the waste baskets, and dust on the appliances. The only areas which were clean were the bathroom, the sink outside the bathroom, and the bed sheets.
We were stunned and extremely disappointed that this once-awesome motel and campground had fallen into this kind of disarray. The campground hasn't been tended in a long time and is visibly returning to its natural state. The pit toilets on the grounds aren't clean - Roger said there was no way he would use them.
Overall, we were extremely disappointed with the condition of both the motel room and the campgrounds. The only reason we've given more than one pine cone is because of Canuck Creek, which you can drive to, the Moyie River, which is accessible from nearly all the sites in the campground, and the old Hotel, which is a living history filled with priceless treasures you would not expect to find.
Other than a stop-over on the way to somewhere else, we will not be returning to Yahk's campground or motel. In fact, we canceled the rest of our stay, and decided to head straight for our next destination: Osooyoos.
