Live from the Marshes

  • Location: north and east of the city
  • Date(s): May 31/08
Good morning, Campers!   Today, we have a special treat for you: Live recordings from some of the marshes we visited, yesterday, while exploring more of the province to the north and east of our city.    These recordings were made with an Olympus Digital Wave Recorder, and they have not been altered in any way.  What you hear is exactly what we heard.  Enjoy!

1.  Yellowheaded Blackbird and Black Terns (a cattle farm is on the opposite side of the marsh):

2.  Yellowheaded Blackbird and Chorus Frogs:

3.  Chorus Frogs, and a small flock of geese that overflew us:

4.  Redwinged Blackbird in the Rosebud Valley:

5.  Redwinged Blackbird, Goldfinch, Song Sparrows, and an owl in the Rosebud Valley:

The marshes are alive with all kinds of birds, including Ruddy ducks, Mallard ducks, Black-necked stilts, and many other species of water and land birds. In total, we saw 37 different species during our jaunt.  We also saw a mule deer doe, two coyotes, two beavers, and a muskrat.  And, to top it off, we also got some lightning shots - which was part of the reason we went out in the first place.  A storm was brewing, and we wanted to chase it.    We drove around three sides of the storm cell, finally stopping at the top of what we call Rosebud Hill (because we don't know what else to call the place ); the sun was setting in a blood-red, rectangular mass, and there was pink lightning moving from cloud to cloud, as well as from cloud to ground.  It was stunning, and we just had to try to capture it on film.  We won't know if our efforts were successful until we get the film developed; if they did turn out, we promise to show them to you!

Have a great day and a great week ahead, Campers. Thanks for dropping by!

Well HOWDY Lady Diana! Long time, no hear! Yes, we really are lucky to be so close to so much nature; we thank the universe for it every day, too.

Have a great Sunday and a great week ahead, my friend!

Hiya Handsome! It is bitchin', isn't it? I could live with listening to those sounds every day; it wouldn't be any hardship at all, that's for sure - especially when all we hear most of the time is planes coming in and/or taking off, sirens, and other bone-rattling, irritating noises...

Have a great day, gorgeous! Thanks for dropping by!

I love what Shawno wrote -- indeed many of us do not hear enough nature these days. An excellent post!

Blessings!

Hi Lacy! Thanks. Being too caught up in the daily grind is one of the reasons this journal was built. If there's a way for us to help people remember that there's more to life than the rat race, we want to share it. I'm really glad that you enjoyed the recordings; more will be coming as time and day trips permit.

Thanks Amanda! We were in the marshes, not the woods, although there are times when being in the woods can seem like we're in the marshes, as some of the sounds are similar.
