Yahk, BC

This little spot just south of Highway 3 West, between the Okanagan Valley and Cranbrook, is a history buff's paradise, and a nature-lover's Garden of Eden. On one side of the highway, the Yak Motel cozies up to the Yahk Campground; on the other side is the old, historical Yahk Hotel, with its wooden silhouette of a man and a woman that's easily half the height of the old place.  The old hotel used to be the main stopover point for the CPR, back in the days when trains were pretty much the only things linking one province to another, but while the trains don't stop there, anymore, the hotel is still thriving.

The entire area offers wonderful adventures, but in our opinion, the real gem of this little backwater place is the Moyie River, which runs serenely along at the back of the Yahk Campground.  This narrow little river is a kind of hidden surprise, in that you don't even know it's there unless you decide to take a walk down the path (there's a path in every spacious campsite that leads directly to the river). And if you've a mind to, you can get up early in the morning, grab your camera, walk down the short path to the river, and see sights like these:

Moyie River in the morning

If you ever wonder what there is to see in Yahk, BC, just take a walk down the path.  If you keep your eyes open, you'll never be disappointed.
